What is PCOS?
What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?
September is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Awareness Month. So, what exactly is polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and what are the symptoms? Known as PCOS, it is a hormonal disorder that is fairly common for females of reproduction age.
PCOS Symptoms
Along with the symptoms listed in the image provided, infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods are common among women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Another symptom is extended periods of excess male hormone (androgen) levels. Ovaries might be enlarged and contain follicles that surround the eggs.
The exact cause of PCOS is unknown. Early PCOS diagnosis and treatment along with weight loss may reduce the risk of long-term complications such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
See your doctor if you have symptom or concerns, and if you’re experiencing infertility. In addition, see a doctor if you have signs of excess androgen such as worsening hirsutism, acne and male-pattern baldness.
