Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure in which a thin, lighted camera called a laparoscope is inserted through a small incision near the navel. Additional small incisions may be made to allow for surgical instruments. Laparoscopy allows our surgeon to directly visualize the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and surrounding pelvic structures. It is used to diagnose and treat conditions such as:

  • Endometriosis: Endometrial tissue outside the uterus can be identified and surgically removed or treated during laparoscopy, which may improve fertility outcomes
  • Pelvic adhesions: Scar tissue that has formed between pelvic organs as a result of prior surgery, infection, or endometriosis can be removed to restore normal anatomy
  • Ovarian cysts: Certain ovarian cysts, including endometriomas, can be surgically removed while preserving ovarian function
  • Tubal disease: Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes may be evaluated and in some cases surgically repaired
  • Fibroids: Subserosal or intramural fibroids that are affecting fertility may be removed through laparoscopic myomectomy

Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a procedure in which a thin, lighted camera called a hysteroscope is inserted through the cervix into the uterine cavity, allowing direct visualization of the interior of the uterus. No incisions are required. Hysteroscopy is used to diagnose and treat conditions within the uterus, including:

  • Uterine polyps: Noncancerous growths on the uterine lining that can interfere with implantation
  • Submucosal fibroids: Fibroids that protrude into the uterine cavity and may impact fertility or increase the risk of miscarriage
  • Uterine septum: A fibrous or muscular division within the uterine cavity that is associated with recurrent pregnancy loss and can be surgically corrected
  • Intrauterine adhesions (Asherman's syndrome): Scar tissue within the uterine cavity that can impair implantation and menstruation
