Former Miss USA Undergoes Surgery for Endometriosis

Former Miss USA Olivia Culpo

Olivia Culpo won the title of Miss USA in 20012. Thereafter, she represented the United States in the Miss Universe Pageant where she also won the competition. She quickly became a media and fashion influencer through her social media networks and many television appearances. In addition, Culpo has become a spokesperson and business person with several brands such as L’Oreal.

Public Awareness of Endometriosis

Culpo wants to raise awareness about endometriosis by sharing personal photos along with updates after getting surgery due to the condition.

The former Miss USA shared snaps taken from the hospital when she underwent surgery to treat endometriosis on Instagram. She didn’t think the photos were “glamorous” but still decided to share them to raise awareness about endometriosis.

From Dr. Sujatha Gunnala

Pay attention to warning Signs. Do not ignore symptoms or painful menstrual periods (known as Dysmenorrhea) as it can be a sign of endometriosis. It is important to address the problem, diagnose and treat it in the earliest stages to prevent progression. Endometriosis is one of the common causes of infertility in women.

About Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a disorder in which tissue similar to the tissue that forms the lining of your uterus grows outside of your uterine cavity.

Endometriosis occurs when endometrial tissue grows on your ovaries, bowel, and tissues lining your pelvis. It’s unusual for endometrial tissue to spread beyond your pelvic region, but it’s not impossible. Endometrial tissue growing outside of your uterus is known as an endometrial implant.

The hormonal changes of your menstrual cycle affect the misplaced endometrial tissue, causing the area to become inflamed and painful. This means the tissue will grow, thicken, and break down. Over time, the tissue that has broken down has nowhere to go and becomes trapped in your pelvis.
