More About National Infertility Awareness Week

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

1 in 10 couples will have difficulty conceiving or staying pregnant, which equates to 6.1 million couples in the United States annually that have difficulty becoming or staying pregnant.

Miscarriages are unfortunate and extremely difficult to go through but are very common in women of all ages. Early pregnancy losses make up to 40-50% of all conceptions.

Infertility is defined as the inability to achieve a successful pregnancy after having regular intercourse for at least 12 months.

Due to the age-related decline in fertility an evaluation is recommended by a fertility specialist after 1 year for women < 35 years old, 6 months for women 35 and older, and an immediate evaluation is warranted in women aged 40 and older.

Immediate evaluation for couples trying to conceive is also warranted if a woman has irregular/absent periods or very painful periods with a history suggestive of endometriosis.

The age related effects of woman’s is related to decreasing egg supply/count and egg quality. These factors decrease continually with age, but more significantly at age 37 and after 40 years old.

Infertility is not only a woman’s issue. A male factor is the only identifiable cause of infertility in 20-30% of cases and plays a role in up to 50% of couples.

Treatment for infertility does not always mean IVF. Other less aggressive treatments include surgery, medications to help a women ovulate, or an Intrauterine Insemination (IUI).

Infertility Does Not Discriminate

Infertility does not discriminate based on race, religion, sexuality or economic status. You never know how badly you want something until you are told that it may not be possible. It is up to all of us to transform how others view infertility. One that will help educate and provide resolution to the millions of Americans impacted. Be part of a movement that wants to remove barriers that stand in the way of building families during National Infertility Awareness Week.
